Look, don't touch

These spiny slug caterpillars sting. They are less venomous than the saddlebag caterpillars but I would still not recommend picking them up.

I remember getting stung by a caterpillar as a kid. Don't remember exactly what it looked like but it was very painful and I remember my hand throbbing for hours afterward. The worst part was nobody would believe me that a caterpillar stung me.

Ouch, that sounds like a typical saddleback sting. They throb and burn and the pain returns in waves for hours. They often also cause a red itchy rash that can last for a week at least. Sorry to hear your family didn't believe you! That's so frustrating when you're a kid and these caterpillar stings are nothing to laugh at. In sensitive people they can cause severe symptoms from nausea and vomiting to feverish muscle cramps and shock. It's one caterpillar you want to be very careful with!

Awesome image...it looks so great against the red of the apple...(who would have imaged a caterpillar could cause so much pain.)
