small neighbors
"small neighbors" is an ongoing project.

I use a reversed-lens webcam to make stills and video of microscopic animals and environments.

This work, along with gorgeous oil paintings based on my stills by my friend Daniel Maidman, was shown in October, 2011 as "small neighbors/Microbiota" at the Brew House Space 101 Gallery.

Erika Johnson began making low-resolution
microscopic video in 2010 after attending a workshop at Carnegie Mellon's Studio for Creative Inquiry. With a simple reversed-lens webcam, she photographs the tiny creatures that inhabit urban water bodies.

small neighbors/Microbiota incorporates video and stills, a live microscopic installation, and Brooklyn-based artist Daniel Maidman's lush oil paintings based on Johnson's photographs.

The artists wish to thank Martin Swartz,, Ritz Camera (Waterworks), Faye Miller, Diane Pittman, Ashley Andrews, and Bethanie Good for generous support of this project.
