Uproot was a collaborative handmade paper installation about community and displacement developed first at Blend Studio in Nashville, Tennessee, then reiterated at Kelly-Strayhorn Theater in Pittsburgh. 2010

ragged, wilted
i send roots up
toward unfamiliar sources
of sustenance, of strength

i send fine fragile feelers to sip at strange springs

each time i am pulled up
parts die
of thirst, of hunger, of neglect
parts stretch
parts break

i grow gnarled, woody
thin roots fall off
thick roots remain, and remember
or don't

we are not trees.
we are more hardy, and more tender
we are more broken, we are stronger

we live
we struggle
we learn
we mourn
we mend
we reach
we grow skyward, outward

we root up

we uproot
