Hydro Majestic, Saint Patrick's Day Ball 1909

Notes:

The ball was a planned as a revival of the Roman Saturnalia, when masters exchanged roles with their servants for the day.

Mark Foy, owner of the hotel, standing center back, wears his wife's hat and dress with wig. On the right in frock and wig with six shooter is Foy's friend, Joe Flanagan playing the role of the Hydro's night watchman. Standing next to Foy is his wife, Elizabeth Dominica, nee Tweedie, apparently regarding him with considerable amusement. At the table are employees being waited on by some of the wealthy guests dressed in staff uniforms.

Seated at right with his hand on his daughter's chair is Mr Butta, harpist of the resident Butta Bros band. At the head of the table on left is the Hydro's masseur, Wilhelm Hugo Hildebrandt, who later married one of the Hydro's guests and started up his own hydropathic establishment in Napier, New Zealand (Jim Smith 2021).
