Brother Can You Spare a Nickel?
When I was a kiddo back in the 70s I could buy a Bazooka gum with a comic in the wrapper for 5¢. Or maybe I could get a jawbreaker, or even a handful of knock-off M&Ms from one of those coin-op candy dispensers. I’m told a nickel could snag a frosty 12-oz bottle of Coca-Cola in the 1950s.
In college during the late 80s in Texas my most prized possession was my Whataburger nickel mug—a lovely coffee cup I could refill with coffee all night long for a nickel a refill. It was glorious, until it suffered a catastrophic drop in the parking lot one summer Eve. It still saddens me, despite my lack of access to Whataburger.
These days? Only good for making change, sadly. Or this photo.
