A stroll on the wild side...
I have no idea what kind of bug this is. Is it some kind of weevil? I don't think it's a beetle, it doesn't seem to have a hard carapace.
Anyhow, with his long flexible snout and closely spaced eyes, he winds up looking pretty silly to me. Just looking at this critter in my photo stream makes me laugh.
I took shots of his cousin the other day. This one turned up on my mousepad. So, I played around with him: 60-watt lamp in one hand camera in the other. I followed him around all over my mousepad until I got a handful of usable shots. I think this is the only one where he's really in focus. (He moved around quite a bit.)
Post processing included improving local contrast, adding some vignetting, desaturating the mousepad (low light conditions create a lot of multi-colored noise in dark areas), sharpening and selective blurring.
PS (08/27/2007): This is, according to Wikipedia, a weevil, more specifically, an acorn weevil.
