Cargo Muchacho AML Remediation

The Bureau of Land Management and California Department of Conservation, Division of Mine Reclamation, are working together to close 65 potentially hazardous abandoned mine openings to protect desert visitors who are riding off-road vehicles, mountain biking or hiking.

Here, BLM staff and student interns take a photo after they counted bats that exited the mine. The goals of BLM's Abandoned Mine Lands Program is to safeguard dangerous mines so people do not fall into them, while still allowing bats, birds, owls, and other critters that use the mine for habitat access. During this particular visit, more than 400 bats were counted exiting the cupola (protective mine closure made of steel). The BLM has had great success with these type of mine closures.
