The Santa Monica Church in Ilocos Norte

Formerly named San Miguel and built by the Augustinian friars during the Spanish Colonial period in the 17th century, the red brick church in Baroque and Neo-Classical style in Sarrat, Ilocos Norte is the largest in the entire Ilocos. It is a favorite for weddings because of its very long 137-meter aisle, the longest in the Philippines -- a bride's dream, I guess. Its popularity rose in 1983 when Irene Marcos, daughter of former-president F. Marcos, tied the knot with Gregorio Araneta III, in a lavish wedding where the rich and famous were gathered together.

My family's residence in Laoag (about 6 kilometers west of Sarrat) is along the main road leading to this church. I clearly remember we were all requested to display potted flowering plants in the front of our houses. Mid-afternoon, locals and visitors were already on the road people and car watching; it was a sunset wedding -- Paparazzi Fiesta in the province of Ilocos Norte, a Marcos bailiwick.

Thank you to JoesSistah, for the texture, whose link I got from Dahil's Two Memories post last night.
