The historic McPike Mansion

    Newer Older

    Alton, IL

McPike Mansion is a 135 year-old home (1865) located in Alton, IL. It has not been occupied for over 50 years and is in need of considerable restoration.

The McPike Mansion was constructed in an Italianate-Victorian style and stands as one of the more elaborate homes in Alton. It contains 16 rooms and a vaulted wine cellar and was originally built on a country estate of fifteen acres that McPike called "Mt. Lookout". Thanks to McPike’s interest in all things horticultural, the estate was planted with rare trees and shrubs, orchards, flowers and extensive vineyards. The owner became the propagator of the McPike grape, which became known across the country.

There are many reports of paranormal activity in this house. It is currently being restored by private citizens. It is a stunning home, and has an eeire history. Adding to the creepiness is that the town in which the McPike resides, Alton, IL, is considered by many to be "the Most Haunted Town in America!"

Hi, I'm an admin for a group called historic porches, gingerbread, woodwork, millwork, & scrollwork, and we'd love to have this added to the group!

50 years unoccupied? i can't imagine the shape it must be in. is the "paranormal" activity the reason it is occupied?
