Endemic to Lord Howe Island, perhaps the most common tree fern on the Island being widespread in moist shaded areas from relatively low elevations (e.g. Intermediate Hill) and onto the mountains.
Cyathea macarthurii is a tall tree fern with a trunk 2 to 5 m high, shaggy from persistent frond bases; a distinguishing feature is the dark brown to black hairs at stipe bases.
The upper mountain forests of Mt Gower and to a lesser degree Mt Lidgbird are known as Gnarled Mossy Cloud Forest
