All Night Long
The EMS radio announces a pending tragedy. A Forty-eight year old man was ejected from his vehicle after a high speed collision. According to the ambulance crew it does not look good, and he will be here in five minutes. And so it goes all night long, the radio calls out the grim details. Seventy-two year old heart attack, eighteen year old gun shot wound to the head, twenty-seven year old motorcycle accident, and on and on. It never stops until I leave in the morning, and then it continues, just on someone else's time.
Being in the Pediatrics section of the Emergency Room I get to avoid most of the carnage. But bad things happen to kids too. The radio crackles to life again, I hold my breath, "please don't be a kid." Thankfully it is just a twenty-seven year old man who has been stabbed with a large kitchen knife.
