Sometimes you are the Rusty Old Hammer, Sometimes you are the Nail

I was pulling for the Rusty Old Hammer to win the Tour de France one last time for sentimental reasons. But not the sentimental reasons one would think.

In 2003 my Mother was dieing of cancer, everyone knew it except her. She insisted on going to the beach for the annual family vacation. She was weak, and only made it out of the hotel for short periods of time. I spent a lot of time indoors that year, and got hooked on watching the Tour de France. Lance won his fifth title, and two weeks later my Mother lost her race.

I watch the Tour every year now as much as I can.

This photo is inspired by Lance's quote when he lost time after a flat tire during stage 3.

"Sometimes you're the hammer, sometimes you're the nail. Today I was the nail,’ Lance Armstrong said Tuesday. “I have 20 days now to be the hammer."

Just to clarify, I don't think Lance is out of contention for the Tour because of his age, but rather bad luck. In winning his 7 tours he had to ride approximately 16,000 miles almost flawlessly. This year, 3 crashes in one day! Just in case he reads this,I didn't want Lance to think I called him a "Rusty Old Hammer." It just made for a better title.

    excellent photo, and execution of your idea, good to read the background and see that this means a lot to you too!

    Very nice!

    Yeah I think he is definitely the recipient of bad luck this year. I hate it for him though. Especially when you go out on top and then they decide to come back again...there is that chance that it will end badly and then people won't remember his 7 wins, they'll remember the bad loss the last time.

    Now I thought the image was very eye catching.......then I read underneath.......well now its breathtaking, top work my friend with lots of emotion :~}
    I always like to see where Cav finishes as he is from the Isle of Man.
    No hdr on my castle, the d300 is rocking again...but most of the credit goes to that 17-55 f2.8

    Love the shot, and a very touching story, too.
    Lance is a huge inspiration to me, also, and I agree, Mike, I don't think it's his age that's put him out of contention. When did any rider have 3 crashes in a single day? Let's hope he can go out on a high with a stage win. I've a hunch he may just do that in one the Pyrannee stages - let's hope so?!

    Thank you everyone.

    Ray Collister It was good to see Cavendish get a couple of wins in. He certainly is explosive at the finish.

    I'm a Lance fan also. I think he would be proud to see your photo and how you carried out his statement. Your story touched me.

    Awesome shot, moving story. I wish my nature was more hammer-like. I'm not exactly nail-like either, though. I think maybe I'm the space between them.
