Red-rumped Parrot: The Waiting Game
Red-rumped Parrot, Purpureicephalus spurius
The Anxious Father.
He might look like he's guarding the entrance to the nest hole, from marauding, sneaky house-hunting Kingfishers, but in fact he has much more on his mind.
His actions suggest that she is inside and sitting on eggs. He sits impatiently outside waiting for an outcome. Like someone checking their social media account, he pokes his head in every few minutes and offers encouragement, but returns to wait.
They are so used to being a pair and doing just about everything together, he must get a feeling of isolation when she is busy.
He also guards the nest when she flies out for a break, but I've never seen the male enter the nest to sit on the eggs.
He just waits.
