Australian Magpie: Urban Girl
Australian Magpie, Gymnorhina tibicen
You may recall this girl from previous seasons.
She is in our local street. They had got an early start on the season and built a nest in a tall gum tree, but in some extreme winds we had a couple of weeks back the little ones were dashed to the ground and perished.
Incidentally, it's no good trying to tell me they are unemotional, as she hung around the tree for several days and uttered a quite mournful short call.
Then they seemed to have disappeared.
Today, on a whim, I decided to walk past the old nest site from previous years.
She has added a new story to the old nest. All the nest above the perforated white strap is new this season.
As usual she has made use of any leftover building materials and there is plastic sheet, wire, cabling and assorted 'string and sealing wax and other fancy stuff'... :-)
