Mosque au Natural

Detroit is considered the Islamic center of America. I'm not sure if there are any, but I have never seen a Mosque in Maine.

The building was quite impressive. Especially at night. Some 35MM scans coming soon!

Wow, I would love to see inside. I hve been to mosques in Turkey. They were amazing in so many ways. I never knew detroit had so many. There is a large mosque in Boston. I believe that is the closest one to us in Maine. My husband grew up attending there when he lived in Nashua, NH.

I peeked in the windows a bit, and it looks beautiful inside. Impressive all the way around. I thought about asking if I could go in, but decided against it.

I probably would have decided the same thing.... but I would have been so tempted! I believe that in order to go inside (if customs are the same as in Turkey) you would have to be fully covered (as a woman) and you would have to take your shoes & socks off and cleanse your feet within the entryway (I am sure they would provide something for that). There was only one "tourist" mosque in Istanbul (the Blue Mosque) and I still needed my head covered and my socks & shoes removed. I was glad to oblige - of course. I was just so thrilled to be allowed inside. Anyway, I would love to see all these mosques in Detroit. They are gorgeous! And you did very well photographing them :)

Drop me a note the next time you're in the Dearborn area and I'll give you a personal tour of the place. It's about 3 years old now.

It looks so nice. Amazing architecture. If they make me go back, I may take you up on that offer.

Dearborn has the largest concentration of Arabs in the entire United States, approximately one third of the city's 100,000 residents are of Middle Eastern descent. Two of the largest Mosques in the nation are in Dearborn. I believe the other one is closer to the center of the Middle Eastern portion of Dearborn, this one here is on the outskirts of the city. The Detroit city limit runs right behind it; north of here is the neighborhood Warrendale in west Detroit.

Despite the presence of mosques in Dearborn and areas throughout the Detroit region including Southfield, more than half of the region's 150,000-200,000 Middle Easterners are actually Christians. A large portion of Dearborn's Middle Eastern population is Chaldean.
