Ashley's Hair Flip
© Billy Wilson 2010
A shot of Ashley flipping her hair infront of the camera on Whitefish Island.
This is Ashley, I met her on Model Mayhem, her Model Mayhem number is 1216213.
About the Photo
*Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS *Lens: EF 50mm ƒ/1.8 II *Shutter Speed: 1/200 Sec. *Aperture Value: ƒ/2.2 *ISO: 100 *Focal Length: 50mm (80mm Equivalent on 35mm Film)
I shot this on a tripod using mirror lockup and a remote switch. To the right of the camera I had a Canon Speedlite 430EX II at 24mm and at full power being shot into a 60" Westcott reflective umbrella about 3 feet away from her, the Speedlite was triggered by a Canon ST-E2 wireless transmitter. To the left of the camera I had a Vivitar flash with a cloth diffusing it at full power being held out over the water by an assistant, it was triggered optically by the light from the Speedlite. To the right of the camera and infront of the model I had another assistant hold a silver reflector to fill in shadows on the right side of her nose.
I did an insane amount of editing on this image, it didn't take me too long, but I did a lot in the few hours that I edited this image. I used atleast 12 different layers and a lot of selective dodging and burning and mid-tone contrast enhancements. I also added the rain by creating noise in the image and adding motion blur to it. I created the water droplets in her hair by also using a noise layer but using motion blur at two different angles to create a sort of diffused white sphere. I added some contrast by blending a black and white layer with the image and using the blend mode soft light. At the end of the editing I saved the 16 bit TIFF I had been using, converted to sRGB colourspace, and saved as a JPEG to upload to the internet.
