Hydrant on a Hill

There's a mysterious US Government area (fenced off with signs and barbed wire) across the street from a playground on Van Ness Street, NW in Washington, DC. Just about the only thing that you can see in this government installation is this red hydrant (or whatever it is) on the top of the hill.

I've always liked the way the bright red hydrant contrasts with the grass, but today was something special: The bright blue sky created a stunning backdrop for the red hydrant. And when I saw a cloud pass by, I knew that I had to quickly snap this photo of the red, green, blue and white all together.

Hydrant on a Hill is a winner of the 2007 DCist Exposed Photography show. For more about the show visit
