Garage Manager Admits Misleading City Inspectors
In this video clip, the parking garage manager refuses to accept my bike for parking--a violation of a new law effective November 11, 2009 in New York City. This is the fourth time he refused me, and I had already filed a complaint with the Department of Consumer Affairs back in November.
The Department supposedly conducted an inspection, and decided that the garage was in compliance with the law. So I went back to the garage to find out what was going on, and filmed the discussion.
I ask the manager about the DCA inspection on the videotape, and he pretty much admits to misleading the inspectors. I don't blame the manager personally. As he explains, he's just doing what his boss told him to do. It's Consumer Affairs that screwed up on this one, by simply taking this guy's word for it, instead of performing the inspection they claimed to have performed (which would have clearly shown that the garage was not in compliance with the law because it does not post any bike parking rates and does not have bike racks installed).
This guy's going to have another visit from the inspectors sooner than he thinks! I told DCA they screwed up and they said they would reinspect.
