Somewhere off in the distance, taps was playing.
Well, I took my eMac in... an hour drive to the Quad Cities.. and they pretty much laughed when I walked in the door with it cradled in my arms.
The hard drive is likely fried, and it's not even worth looking at, is what they said.
One thing helpful they told me is that hard drives have an expected life of three years.
So... I am going to save my pennies, and in a few years maybe I'll have the $2,000 I'll need to recover my data.
Ah, well... that's life. (As Ralphie's dad said when Ralphie didn't get everything he wanted for Christmas).
