Even more monstrous
Now shod with Annie the Blue Bike's winter tyres—a Schwalbe Ice Spiker up front and a Schwalbe Marathon Winter on the back—which together weigh in at a frightful 2kg, my extra-monstrous RANS has been plugging through the snow this week. Mudguards are SKS 55mm, which in hindsight ought to have been 65mm, and the extremely tight fork clearance means that powdery snow sprays merrily out on each side at the top. Today was sunnier and the snow more slush than powder.
To avoid running the tyres on tarmac too much I took to the old Balerno branch line alongside the Water of Leith, from Bogsmill Road to the former Colinton Station. The long wheelbase format provides some latitude in sliding around on the snow, and is easier to get a foot down if need be, but 7mph was still all I could manage.
