Exactly what I did not want to see on my way home today...

As I drove home to New Gretna from Southampton I came across this scene. While driving south two cars flew by. As they sped by in the opposite direction on the shoulder I noticed something odd but I knew exactly what it was. A tail was flinging crazily in the air. I thought it was a snake but was't 100% sure so I stopped and turned around to check it out. It turns out it was a snake and it was an endangered timber rattlesnake. It was still alive but severely injured. It's whole body was crushed under the weight of a motor vehicle. I called Dave Golden a zoologist with NJ Fish & Wildlife and took the snake home with hopes that it would survive the night and then be transferred to the Cape May County Zoo in the morning. Unfortunately, it died an hour after I got home. Please watch any and all roads while driving through the pinelands during summer months!
