Ruins of Sutro Baths, 1975

Ruins of Sutro Baths, 1975

This is my favorite image of Sutro Bathes ( ruins), I shot this in 1975 - we used to love going out on this rock, which had this brilliant pathway leading to it (safely) - it was spectacular in storms too, as waves would wash over in exploding plumes, but you needed foul weather gear, focused attention to hold onto the jagged rocks, and a bit of crazy

This image is an accidental in-camera double exposure, 4 x 5" view, combining the sunrise over San Francisco from Twin Peaks with the sunset over the fishing rock below the Cliff house, part of the ruins of Sutro Baths. Sunrise and Sunset Montage Image; in camera 4 x 5 view, sunrise over City from Twin Peaks, sunset on rock below Cliff House.

Located below the Cliff House in the ruins of what was once Sutro Bathes, there used to a pathway that led to the large fishing rock. This was a spectacular and special place to go, especially during more extreme weather when the crashed hard all around you - rain gear required. Suffice to say, the Government eventually had to protect the people from themselves, and demolish this structure, as apparently some choose to visit in various states of inebriation, or recklessly fail to securely hold on to the rock as the waves crashed over them, leading to predictable results. The Pathway was demolished in the 90's

- eventually, apparently due to the drunken ones falling in, the pathway was demolished.
