Praying Mantis (Archimantis latistyla)

Adult large brown mantid, Archimantis latistyla perched on hosta leaf bordering our back patio. He climbed out onto the leaf to drink water droplets and kept turning his head 180 degrees to the right to keep a watch on a yellow jacket that was buzzing around.

The first thoracic segment, the prothorax is elongated and from it arises the modified foreleg. Mantids are carnivores and use their antennae for smell.
