Description: April means one thing to many people—Opening Day and the start of baseball season. In April 1963, St. Procopius College (now Ben U) got their season underway by facing down the University of Chicago, Concordia College, and IIT in the Chicagoland Baseball Tournament. Led by first basemen Steve Napierala’s hitting and pitcher Dom Castino, the Eagles defeated the Chicago Illini at IIT 7-5 and brought home the school’s first baseball trophy since 1935. Napierala, class of 1963, was a 2011 Ben U Athletics Hall of Fame inductee for both baseball and football. He also pioneered the college’s hockey club team and led it in scoring in both his junior and senior seasons. Coach Pasquini, who also coached varsity basketball, was honored that spring by the Brooklyn Tablet as Catholic Coach of the Year. The trophy now resides in the university archives.
