Tribal deviation...

...urban evolution.......................

Uniting the different tribes of this mega city is a clear objective for Hummingbird’s Breakdance group, AfroBreak. Their latest dance production, Tribal Union aims to break down some of the many barriers of predujice prevalent in São Paulo’s urban periphery, a city divided by many neighbourhoods.

Within and between these neighbourhoods there are traced boundaries, which limit the mobility of the population and the opportunity to learn and experience different spaces and surroundings. These boundaries, most of which are invisible, give a clear view of what can be considered as known, dominated and controlled. Young people consider moving from one place to another like entering an unknown and dangerous world that is governed by a different set of conducts. The question of drug trafficking often limits mobility within urban spaces, and it is this lack of mobility that encourages the classifications of “the other”, of what is “different”, and of the “unknown”, leading to stigmatisation and bias.
