Twinkle of an eye...
School summer holidays are soon coming to an end here in Brazil.
Holidays mean high risks for many of the community kids we work with because they are left alone to fend for themselves most of the day by parents who need to carry on working long hours throughout the school holidays to make ends meet. It’s not every year that we get the chance to take the kids on an organized holiday.
As the gates at Hummingbird are always open, Elias and a bunch of the other community kids from one of the many favelas (shanties) where we work our Street Migration Prevention Programme, stopped by my home yesterday for a visit. He just wanted to remind me that it was a year ago that he and his brothers, along with several other children from Hummingbird, enjoyed a holiday of a lifetime on the coast in Paraty, thanks to the contributions made by members of the Flickr community towards the Reaching for a Star Christmas Campaign last year.
By nature, a very quiet kid, Elias could not stop telling the other kids about all the great things he did during that memorable holiday, much of what you can see in this series.
This year he was sorry to not have had the same holiday opportunity, but I told him we cannot afford such a luxury every year and that funds from this year’s campaign will go towards helping other children to leave the streets.
We still have a long way to reach this year’s target so if you would like to join us and help us to put Elias’ twinkle of an eye on many other faces, you are most welcome to join the group and make your contribution. We are really thankful for any amount you can spare.
Who knows, maybe I’ll get a chance for a couple of days on the beach with some of the kids during Carnival. We have a tough year ahead of us, but nothing compared to the lives many of them lead.
