On the Road - XXIV
Taking Hummingbird’s hairdressing saloon to the different communities was really popular during our Beija-Flor na Comunidade week. There are really many Afro-brazilians in underprivileged communities who are quite accustomed to doing their own hair, often with a little help from other family members or neighbours. Therefore there is always a lot of interest shown in learning new techniques and about new products so as to become even more self-sufficient in the way of hair-care. This is not only practical but also a sheer necessity considering the economics of self-sufficiency.
There are many young people who manage to qualify themselves through the hairdressing training offered at Hummingbird, which in turn gives them the possibility to do services in their own community and earn some pocket money in the process.
