Uniting the different tribes of this mega city is a clear objective for the Hummingbird centre’s own Breakdance group, AfroBreak. The group’s continuous seeking towards a more individual and contemporary dance style, uniting their Afro-Brazilian roots with modern street dance, has resulted in an exuberant and energetic dance series called “Tribal Union”, which aims to break down some of the many barriers of predujice prevalent in São Paulo’s urban periphery, a city divided by many neighbourhoods.

Their personal style and expressive make-up has quickly made the group a popular element in São Paulo’s active Hip-Hop milieu, where they continually participate in public events.

September Theatrical – 2007 at our Hummingbird Arts & Cultural Activity Centre in Diadema, São Paulo, brought theatrical shows for children and adults, workshops, dance and circus performances by professional and amateur groups, lovers of the Art of making one travel to other Worlds, other lives and other dreams.....

Included in this wonderful community week of scenic artforms were also several productions created by the kids of Hummingbird, one of them being the AfroBreak dance group who performed the latest dance sequence in their Tribal Series, “Tribais”, where their make-up was inspired by Eric Lafforgue’s fabulous Papua New Guinea photo series on Flickr.
