Snake’s-eye view of Carnival

A giant puppet’s hand reveals more than just mere fingers...

These giant puppets are made by local inhabitants of the old colonial coastal town of Paraty in Rio de Janeiro. The puppets, carried by both adults and children, form the traditional "Assombrosos do Morro" or "Horrors of the Hill" group, who parade the narrow, cobbled streets during carnival in Paraty, trying to frighten off the thousands of visitors who flock to see them.
