{59/365} thank you vancouver ~ thank you canada!

I let the dog (the one in the preceding photo) out this morning, and this remnant of fall was sitting on the snow outside...appropriate, I guess, for the closing day of the Vancouver 2010 Olympics.

These Olympics started off on a low note ~ the untimely and tragic death of the young Georgian bobsledder, the malfunction of the Olympic cauldron, the balmy non-winter temperatures ~ and drew the criticism of many. However, over the course of the past two weeks, they came into their own ~ not only did Canada start winning medals in record numbers, but the entire country seemed to get swept up in rare showings of overt patriotism ~ not exactly characteristic of my countrymen. But I'm really only paraphrasing what Stephen Brunt so eloquently expresses in this stirring video essay...(worth a look no matter where you're from).

I'm well aware there are many other serious and immediate issues facing the world today, and that the value/importance of the Olympics can be the target of much criticism and debate. But to my mind (and yes, this will sound corny), an event that brings the countries and people of the world together in a positive way, that gives us all a chance to wave our flags and celebrate the diversity of our world at the same time, can't be all bad.

Thank you Vancouver, for playing gracious host, and congratulations to all the athletes who gave it their best! (And good luck to both Canada and the U.S. in today's hockey game!) :)
