"CHALLENGE FIVE: SAY KONICHIWA TO FASHION
This week the Far East inspires our challenge. We go to the land of the rising sun for our challenge and take one of the most recognizable and famous national dress to the couture realm. The traditional Japanese kimono is one of the most beautiful forms of dress. In this challenge you will take a traditional kimono and turn it into a couture fashion. The gloves are off and the fans are down on this one, the judges want to see the kimono looking like we've never seen it before."
I totally love this challenge since I generally love orientalia and anything asian. I created a double updated kimono meant to be worn together over a sheer tattoo printed dress. The first Kimono is structured, almost like a suit, and the other, soft made of silk and held together with a leather, reptile design obi. I intentionally picked contrasting colors to create interest on the top, and keeping the dress, with its colorful print which i designed and use some print transfer process to create a distinct pattern, in neutral, together with the accessories to balance everything out. I thought it looks modern, yet with a little nod from its origins.
