French Woodland Strawberry
The French Woodland Strawberry, fraiser des bois, is an easily grown, spreading by seed and runners, year-long fruit producer. In full or partial sun with adequate water during dry spells, this is a lovely groundcover, easily trimmed and maintained border, and edible fruiting perennial. With too much direct sun in the summer months the leaves will burn; however, given extra water and having the leaves trimmed will keep them tidier and happier. The berries are very small, but sweet and are used as dessert garnishes. I planted them for wildlife; birds such as the catbird and northern cardinal love them as do squirrels and others. My family enjoys them as toppings for ice cream and added to yogurt, cereal, muffins, and pancakes.
