Jerusalem Marathon March 25 2011-298
The first International Jerusalem Marathon was held on Friday, March 25. Our apartment is in Talpyot, on the south east edge of Jerusalem, and the marathon went right past us, on the way up towards the Jerusalem Promenade and then to the turn around point adjacent to the United Nations complex. This was probably the most beautiful part of the city that the marathon transversed, and the climb to the turn around point was challenging -- but also provided a wealth of photgraphic material. What I saw along the way and at that point was amazing. Thousands of runners, from their teens to their 70's, thin and fat, some pushing children in strollers, some showing their exhaustion, others showing exhileration -- all showing determination. As the throngs thinned, i worked my way down to Derech Hebron, where the set ends. The last photo is ot a mistake. I had just photographed runners being given water bottles and one runner drinking, when I turned to proceed on the sidewalk and encountered immediately opposite me, this ultra-religious man, drinking from his bottle of water. I didn't know how he would take being photographed, but he responded good naturedly with a blessing. And so be it -- may the blessing be for all who took part and made this an extraodinary event.
