Diving at the Swim/Gym - Hermosa Beach, California 1965

    Newer Older

My dad was helping me learn to dive off the diving board.

The place is long gone now, but it was somewhere on Aviation Blvd east of Pacific Coast Highway.

Wasn't the Swim Gym in Hollywood Riviera? I seem to remember that it was across from Miss Dawn's swim school there. . .

      I could be wrong though.

I had swim lessons at the indoor pool at the Hermosa Biltmore taught by Mrs. Bova. I remember the 2 swim schools on Avenue I in Redondo Beach, Miss Dawn's (had a few lessons there too) and there was another one directly across the street from it.

I chipped a tooth at the Biltmore. ..the piece is probably still down there under the sand.

Ron, I also took swim lessons at the biltmore a couple years earlier. I remember slipping on the tiles when hurrying to the bathroom, and falling hard backwards on my head. Ouch! I don't remember much about who taught the lessons or anything..mabye it's because of the fall? :)

By the way, great collection of old Hermosa photos you have, Ron!

Thanks. I always keep searching for Hermosa pictures - have yet to post any of my own that I shot! (have 100s of them - maybe even 1000s as I shot tons of slides in the 1970s, 80s)

I, too, bumped my tooth on the side of the pool at The Biltmore - luckily no chip. The Bovas lived the street over from me ... kids before and after me in school. Think Tommy Bova a year younger than me. Then one of their older boys became a policeman. Funny, recall Mr. Bova had an Isetta (door that swung open from the front) - 1st the 2 seater and then he had the 4 seater (a rear side door too).

Due to poor ventilation, the pool & changing rooms at The Biltmore always smelled like chorline & high in humidity - the paint peeling from the walls. Remember the floor always wet in the changing room. Once our family went to some water show put on there - my older cousin, Elyse, headed for the restroom & went into the men's changing area instead of the women's.

I was in the same 'class' as Steve Bova and your sister Ron, and the experiences written down here are very similar to mine..and you describe the inside of the Biltmore's plunge exactly as I remember it too. Paul Matthies was my swim teacher there.

on a whim I Googled Swim Gym Hermosa Beach and found this wonderful photo. I lived on 940 10th st, just 1 block away. I used to take swimming lessons and swam here just for fun as a kid during the early 70's. I vividly remember the underground viewing area which seems to be pictured here. Many, many fond memories with friends and my family.

      Thank you for posting this.

ackc1966 - we have a few pictures that were taken thru the viewing window underwater as well. Not as good as this one so I've never uploaded them to Flickr. I had a scary experience in the other pool there ( the one that was shallow on each end) when I jumped in alongside another kid, who then discovered he couldn't swim, panicked, and proceeded to drag me under. Luckily at last a lifeguard jumped in and grabbed us out.

      Thanks for the comment.

Oh yes, lived on 10th street. Went regularly to the Swim Gym where Paul and Anita Mathies offered swim classes and two pools to swim in. I so wanted to swim in the big pool and demonstrated my ability to swim the length of the pool by jumping in and breast stroking my way along the bottom of the pool. When I surfaced Anita and my dad were laughing. It was such a fun place. Loved the viewing window.

I am pleased that our pictures of you learning to dive ,and swim at the Swim Gym are so well received. I remember swimming in the Hermosa Plunge when my mother took me when we first rented a place on, I think it was 19th off Hermoas ave ,when the tracks went down the street in the early Forties.

Great picture. a cousin taught me how to dive. Its a shame so many pools removed their diving boards and slides due to "Liability Issues"..
