RPSI 'Best of Both' Rail Tour
Here we see Irish Rail 071 Class diesel loco number 073 pulling the RPSI heritage carriages on the "Best of Both" rail tour on the 3rd of October 2010. The train is almost home now, having just passed through Maynooth on it's way to it's final destination, Connolly Station.
071 class locos like this used to be very common on this stretch of track, pulling the InterCity trains between Dublin and Sligo for decades. Now, we almost never see them. The 071s have now been withdrawn from passenger service, and just work the small amount of freight traffic left on Irish Rail. Here we see 073 in it's new freight livery, in the past she would have been seen in Irish Rail's old orange passenger livery. Considering she was built in 1976 I guess she's looking pretty well!
The water in the foreground is the Royal Canal.
