St Louis Civil War Graves - Pic 16

This is the grave of US Major General Andrew Jackson "A.J." Smith - Bellefontaine Cemetery, St. Louis, Missouri. Smith, a graduate of West Point, served in the Mexican War. At the start of the Civil War, he was appointed colonel of the 2d California Cavalry. In early 1862 Smith would be promoted brigadier general of volunteers commanding the cavalry in the Department of Missouri. He would be promoted to major general and would command divisions in the XIII and XVI Corps. He saw action in several significant battles: Chickasaw Bayou, Arkansas Post, Vicksburg and Red River campaigns, Price's Missouri Raid of 1864 and Nashville. He would command the XVI Corps by the end of the war. Smith would retire from the regular army in 1869 and would become postmaster at St. Louis. He died there on January 30, 1897.
