These shots mark a sad moment, my last few days of reasonable personal mobility. I suffer from M.E./CFS and have operated a car for the last three years under the Motability scheme linked to my state Disability Living Allowance (DLA).
However due to escalating costs (£8bn in 2003, an estimated £10.2bn this year) around half of DLA claims are currently being disallowed at first sight and if applicants want their allowance they are being forced to appeal for it. The plan is clearly to discourage claimants from pursuing a claim but, as it is lengthy and time consuming, it is most likely to discourage claimants with fatigue issues like M.E.
The appeal process is currently taking 13 weeks just for an informal appeal (a formal appeal has to go before a tribunal) and - unfortunately - my current DLA award and the Motabilty lease on my car expire on Saturday August 9 but my case is still locked in the informal appeal cycle.
I took the car for a last private run today to the Essex/Herts borders and a few places I had either been to before or wished I had had more time and energy to explore while I still had the car.
