Stapleford Tawney War Memorial, Essex

Albert Godsafe, private, 4th Battalion Grenadier Guards, died September 1916. His body was never found and he is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.

 

Henry Hartgrove, 21, corporal, 2nd Battalion Essex Regiment, died October 1916. His body was never found and he is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. Son of Mr and Mrs G. Hartgrove of Colliers Hatch, Tawney Common.

 

Robert Mepsted, 27, sapper 71st Field Company, Royal Engineers. Died Christmas Day 1916. Buried at Basra, Iraq. Son of Charles and Hannah Mepsted of Stapleford Tawney, husband of Ada Mepsted of Wisbech.

 

Albert Starling - no record at CWGC. Possibly merchant seaman?

 

Arthur William Starling, 20, able seaman HMS Raglan, Royal Navy. Died 20/01/18. Son of Benjamin and Mary Starling of Tawney Common. CWGC notes his brother Albert Benjamin 'also fell' yet there is no separate listing for him.

HMS Raglan was a coastal bombardment monitor sunk by the Goeben and Breslau with the loss of 127 hands on 20/01/18.

 

Walter Stubbings cannot be traced from available records as the CWGC - there are too many W. Stubbings.

 

Malcolm Sworder, 26, Lieutenant, Canadian Reserve Cavalry Regiment / 59 Squadron Royal Flying Corps. Died 1918 and buried in France. Son of Harry and Eleanor of Berkhampsted, Herts.

 

Norman Sworder, Lieutenant, British Columbia Regiment / 5 Squadron Royal Air Force. Died 1918 and buried in France. No parents listed at CGWC but appears to be the brother of Malcolm.

 

George Herbert Fish, 26, private, 6th battalion Queen's Own Royal West Kent Regiment, died 1943 in Italy. Son of Robert and Daisy Fish, husband of Frances Fish of North Weald Bassett.
