Ruined church at Church Ope Cove, Portland Bill, Dorset

There's not a great deal left and what there is is hidden under lots of undergrowth but this is the remains of the former Portland Bill parish church.

The footpath sign says '13th century chapel' but local history websites say this is the 12th century St.Andrew's Church.

This website: www.strollingguides.co.uk/books/dorset/walks/churchope1.php says the church was built on the side of the cliff in stages between 1150 and 1470 but a landslide in 1675 badly damaged it. It was demolished in 1756 but seems to have continued as a burial ground as later tombstones are here, some standing upright in the body of the church itself.
