Fun Facts about Osprey:
*Ospreys are found on every continent except Antarctica. They breed on all continents except Antarctica and South America.
*Ospreys eat a diet which consists almost exclusively of fish. This earned them the nickname “sea hawk.”
*Ospreys hunt fish by hovering over water and then diving feet first to capture prey in their powerful talons.
*An Osprey’s outer toe is reversible, which means they can carry prey (slippery fish) with two toes in front and two toes behind.
*While flying away with the freshly-caught prey, an Osprey will manipulate the fish so that it is parallel to the bird’s body, and thus aerodynamic.
*The oldest known North American Osprey lived to be 25 years old.
*During the mid-20th century, North American Osprey populations suffered great losses (along with other birds of prey) due to widespread use of the pesticide DDT. After DDT and other contaminants were banned, the *Osprey recovered fairly quickly.
*Ospreys make large nests on the top of dead or live trees. They will also readily use nest platforms or other man-made structures like utility poles.
More Facts from Judy (Thanks!) :
More facts.........those special talons automatically "lock" onto the fish, to ensure that they won't drop it.....and they have a fail safe device built into them that make's it impossible to release the fish into the nest when there are babies, if the fish is still flopping about. It could knock a baby out of the nest.....so they will take it to a nearby spot and disable it first....Osprey spend summer's together, but the male and female go on separate vacations in the south. (That is how they keep their 15-20 yr. marriage going!)...Each couple has their own "decorating" style when building their nest. Some show specific preference for certain building material....I Watched a couple two summers ago that had a thing for yellow caution tape. Every year, they go all over collecting it and wrapping their entire nest in it!...They are also the only predatory bird that can actually dive into water. Unlike eagles that snatch their prey off the surface, osprey can dive down up to 3 ft. to grab a fish. Like all birds, their bones are hollow, which makes them buoyant.
