Male Mourning Dove
I love the soft coo of the mourning dove. We have several that overwinter in Wasaga Beach but it's hard to get anywhere near them. I usually see them when we scare each other - they take flight when I approach and the noise scares the heck out of me.
An interesting fact about this gentle bird is that they feed milk to their young - it's not true milk but a nutritious liquid produced by glands in the birds crop. The chicks insert their beaks (the book called them bills?) down the adult's throat to eat this protein rich fluid.
I will be off of flickr again after tonight - work keeps getting in the way :-( Thanks for supporting my work while I'm a part-time flickrite.
