Smoking Stonehenge

I've always wanted to do one of these shots with the Milky Way.

Since I couldn't figure out the intervalometer on my D700 to work for star trails, I went for this shot instead. Had a small window before the moon came out and made the night sky blue. I should go back there again on a darker night.

I'd assumed this was taken with an older, faster MF lens, but your exif says 17mm f/2.8, so my questions are- did you buy this new and if so how long ago? I don't want to besmirch anyone's good name in public so maybe I'll finish that thought via PM.

The faster the lens, the more distortion or coma you'll see but the right side is much more noticeable than my 50mm f/1.2. Given that you shot at 2.8 and it's only on the right, well, that kind of jumps out at me. Does the lens make any noise if you shake it, or do you feel a vibration within the barrel? If so, a lens element has likely come loose.

Visually inspect the lens on the body. You might see that the lens is not quite straight in relation to the film plane (sorry, went old-school here) or rest of the camera. And look for any tell-tale signs of impact anywhere on the lens, although it could've taken a knock in a padded case.

    I hope this helps!

: This was with a new (about 6 month old) Nikon 17-35mm/f2.8D lens. I will have to check the lens for the symptoms you describe - thanks :)
[It is still under warranty - so I'm not as worried]

Good- I'm glad it's new and will be taken care of. If you got it at a local store it couldn't hurt to ask the manager to do a defective exchange instead of a warranty repair. Remember, every night you are without that lens, Ben is sneaking around your turf :)

I'm on HIS turf?! Well.. I guess it is in Washington...
I don't know Bala, what do you think of the Gorge? Is it Portland's or shared by WA and OR? ;-)
I think Mark just likes to cause trouble...

  5. .Bala 45 months ago | reply

: hahaha... Ben can sneak around all he wants if he's producing crazy awesome shots like he does! But good point - I should get my lens checked so I can be on top of all the sneaking around that happens.

: LOL.. Mark is definitely a troublemaker! The gorge is definitely over in the OR side (atleast all the pretty waterfalls are) - I wish it was closer so I could drive to it after work (like the peeps from Portland do, and make me super jealous)

Divide and conquer! MWAaaahahahaha- the East Coast is mine! Miiiiiiiine!!

  8. Ben Canales 45 months ago | reply

Yeah... the waterfalls here are slightly ludicrous. I still can't fully wrap my head around it!
@Mark- you better get out shooting, I'm coming home for Christmas!

Ben- coming to Joisey to shoot? I am shaking so hard I need a tripod! :)

We need to start a thread somewhere for taunts and "top this" type stuff. And to ponder the mysteries of Masahiro's haikus.

: " I am shaking so hard I need a tripod! :)" - hahahahaha.. That is the funniest thing I've heard all week!

I haven't gotten to Masahiro's haikus yet, but I'm still pondering how he could mistake you for a woman in that shot.

"Yo! I'me gonna breng my cammer back ta Joisey and come kick yo DC star shootin %*&*$!!"
"HAY! Come check dis' out! Yo we can see staus from da' cammer!"

I'm thinking Jersey Shore meets Bill Nuy the Science Guy.

So, in this "top this" forum, would there be mama jokes involved?

  12. icecubephoto - trying to catch up 45 months ago | reply

Well, I was thinking instead of Yo Mama jokes we could do Yo Cam'ma jokes, but most of us have the same gear.

Man, we have totally hijacked Bala's comments. Sorry Bala!

  13. .Bala 45 months ago | reply

, : LOL!!! We should totally start a taunt thread with yo cam'ma, or "your lens so fat...." (or your aperture's so wide...)!

50mm, f/1.2... my lens is so fast it can capture a bright idea in a dark room... aww yeaaaahhh!

  15. Ben Canales 45 months ago | reply

Wow, Mark, that was pretty clever. My wittiness seems to be at a low right now...
I'll try to be back with one this weekend

: Thanks Sambit. This was taken with a Nikon D700 and a 17-35mm lens. I shot this at 17mm for 30secs at f2.8 and ISO 3200. Hope that helps.
