Begich Tower
In the early 1940s, Whittier was a military station for bringing in goods to mainland Alaska via train. The tunnel was created specifically for this task as Whittier has an ice-free port.
Today almost 80% of the 182-person population of Whittier lives in this colorful Begich Tower. The habitations are sold as condos and those that are vacant are run by a woman who turns them into a B&B.
