Finding a subject...

Recently I keep finding myself surrounded by beautiful landscapes and scenery but often can't get a photo to quite work because I can't find an interesting foreground, which I think is quite an important rule when shooting landscapes.

I was wondering if anyone had any other rules they like to follow?

I know photography isn't about 'rules' as such but they often give more consistent results when you do things like 'rule of thirds' etc

Any thoughts?
