S. Miguel is the greenest and the largest island of the Azores and it also has the highest level of volcanic activity. At Furnas , there are numerous boiling springs where you can see certain pockmarked areas with myriads of fumaroles boiling and bubbling up from the earth's interior: a grim reminder of the seething volcanic activity just below the surface.

In these boiling craters the locals cook corn on the cob , a delicacy that attracts turists.
