Project:1812 - Acaster and the Bloody Assizes

    Newer Older

This commercial block along the main street of Ancaster Ontario was one home ot the Rousseau Hotel, and site of the trials that became known as the Bloody Assizes.

The Assizes were setup to try and convict men from Upper Canada who favoured and supported the invading American Forces. Stationed out of Chatham, ON, these raiders launched attacks against both civilian and military targets in support of the USA.

Military raids in May of 1814 captured these raiders, finding among them citizens of Upper Canada, these 19 men were brought to trial.

Ancaster and the Old Stone (Rousseau) Hotel were chosen as it was the largest building close to the fortifications at Burlington Heights to support the crowds that the trials would attract.

The original structure burned in 1878 leaving only some of the original structure intact, and was rebuilt the same year.
