Breakfast at Tiffany's? No - breakfast at Zabar's. Lox & Bagel and coffee.

I spent a long weekend in New York City from 24 - 26 October, 2009. When we first arrived, there were strong thunderstorms, so since it was later in the afternoon, we just stayed in our hotel (Hilton Newark Penn Station) and regrouped for the next day, unwinding with a delicious Jack Daniels.

 

The next day we started out early and rode New Jersey Transit into Manhattan and took the subway up to Zabar's. In the cafe, we noshed on a breakfast special that included orange juice, some of their awesome coffee and a bagel with chive cream cheese and lox. We also shared a black-and-white cookie. At the communal table, we chatted with a cool family down from Boston for a bar mitzvah.

 

Afterwards we walked through the store and marveled at the huge, fresh selections of - everything! Olives, cheese, meats, seafood, bread, coffee, sweets. It was a great visit.

 

We made our way downtown via subway, stopping briefly at Dean & Deluca for a respite. I bought a few small items and we shared an incredible doughnut from the Doughnut Plant --- a square pastry filled with homemade strawberry jam and frosted with a peanut butter icing.

 

From there we took a cab to Chelsea Market and spent some time there exploring all the wonderful gourmet stores - cupcakes and other sweets, artisan meats, fresh-baked bread, farm fresh dairy, green produce and more. We ducked into The Green Table to sample a few local beers on tap.

 

Afterwards, we took another cab to the New Amsterdam Market, a monthly set-up at the Fulton Fish Market at the South Street Seaport. It was incredible, and we indulged on freshly-shucked oysters and sampled all sorts of cheese and other goodies. We met some great people and enjoyed the festive atmosphere of all the folks relishing in local foods and foodways.

 

From this market, we caught a cab to Little Italy and went to Lombardi's, which says they are the first pizzeria in America; the pizza oven is dated 1905. We had a classic pizza margarita and it was delish - the crust, sauce and toppings of mozzerella and basil chiffonade was perfect. A couple more local beers washed it all down.

 

Capping off the evening, we popped in Pinkberry for a sweet-tart frozen yogurt treat. We then hopped in a cab back to New York Penn Station for the train trip back to New Jersey.

 

The next day we had breakfast in the hotel before returning to Manhattan for an appearance on the Living Today show on the Martha Stewart Living Radio network on Sirius Satellite Radio. I was on with host Mario Bosquez to discuss my book, "Popcorn" and to talk about popcorn treats for Halloween. The studio is on the 36th floor of a skyscraper in Rockefeller Center, so we walked around a little before the show and shared a hot pretzel from a street vendor and spied other offerings, including roasted chestnuts.

 

After the show, she split a delish hot dog dressed simply with some brown mustard before heading back to the train station then back to New Jersey and our parked car and drove home.
