Reddish Egret, Ft Fisher Spit, New Hanover Co, NC 8-5-11
Reddish Egrets are infrequent visitors to the NC coast particularly during post breeding dispersal. Though I’ve seen them in Florida, I’d never seen one in NC until this one! After looking for several years I was finally at the right place at the right time. These birds are fascinating to watch because their fishing technique is very active and athletic—they twist and turn and run about, holding their wings open, presumably to create shadows that confuse the fish. In my photostream I made a set that captures some of this movement and one instance of fishing success!
