Hainanese Lum Mee Noodles close-up - Tofu King AUD10.50
I don't know when I last had had 淋面 Hainanese Noodles (Lam Mee), so now that Tofu King serves it, I had to try it. Plus it did appear in the row of the menu, so it must be a dish the kitchen is proud of.
Presented in a bowl half-filled with brown gravy streaked with egg, it was off to a promising start. I taste the gravy and immediately the briny sweet combination of oyster sauce hits me. That really shouldn't be how it should taste. I stir in a little sambal belacan, as you would do if you were having this in Malaysia, and the gravy becomes more balanced by the slight tartness. It's not the best example of Lam Mee, but I'd be happy to have it again.
Upon first impressions, Tofu King 酿三宝 seems like another commercial looking Malaysian restaurant serving 酿豆腐 Yong Tofu, beancurd and other morsels stuffed with fish mousse. But with 海南淋面 Hainanese Noodles joining 咖哩辣沙 Curry Laksa, 虾面 Penang Prawn Noodle, 亚三辣沙 Assam Laksa on the top row of the menu, perhaps it is worthy of the prime location on Swanston Street.
For the first day of operation, the staff seem clued-up and friendly. I'll have to check back next time for the 酿豆腐 Yong Tofu! After all, the name of the shop, 酿三宝, means three stuffed treasures in Chinese!
