Moluccan Cuckoo (Cacomantis heinrichi)

Photographer : © Pete Morris (Birdquest)

Location :Foli, Halmahera, Indonesia

Date :September 2007

Equipment :

Alt. Common Name :Heinrich's Brush-Cuckoo, Heinrich's Brush Cuckoo, Heinrich's Cuckoo

Bird Family :Cuculidae - Old World cuckoos, koels & malkohas

Red Data Status :Near Threatened » more details

Remarks :This Cacomantis cuckoo is morphologically and vocally very distinct from Brush Cuckoo C. variolosus infaustus and is presumably Moluccan Cuckoo C. heinrichi, which is the only other Cacomantis cuckoo known from the island. Note that the identity is uncertain because the bird very closely resembles Rusty-breasted Cuckoo C. sepulcralis aeruginosus from Seram, Buru and Ambon. It is possible that this individual could be this subspecies, but more likely that C. heinrichi and aeruginosus are extremely similar and should probably be correctly placed together as Moluccan Cuckoo (They may even prove to be the same taxa). In any event they seem quite different from either Brush or Rusty-breasted Cuckoos.
